San Antonio Retablo Finder of Lost Objects and Animals, Patron of Worthy Husbands, Women who Want Children, Orphans and Miracles

Antonio was born in Portugal in 1195 and died in 1231 at the age of 35. He became a Franciscan monk trained by San Francisco himself. He was a very charismatic preacher bringing even the biggest sinner into the light. He was said to have radiated an unusual holiness. He performed many miracles. A novice once borrowed his prayer book without asking but returned it after a "fearful apparition" overcame him. This is why San Antonio is patron of lost objects. "O, Holy San Antonio, your love of god and charity for all his creatures made you worthy on earth to possess miraculous powers. I humbly ask of you to whisper my petition (you request) into the ear of the infant Jesus whom you so loved. My gratitude will be always yours."

Handpainted with a prayer and/or information about the saint on the back.

Retablos are devotional images of Christian saints painted by santeros, or "saint makers." Retablos in New Mexico were created and popularized in the 1800s, and traditional practices are still used by artisans there today. The artist of this retablo, Lynn Garlick, has been creating retablos in New Mexico since 1993.
