St. Teresa of Avila Retablo Patroness of Faith, Heart Disease and Headaches

Born in Castile near Avila (Spain) in 1515, Teresa and her brother loved the idea of becoming martyrs so much so they ran away from home to the land of the Moors only to be found by an uncle who returned them to their worried mother. Teresa's mother died when she was 14. Her father took her to a convent. She returned to her father because of a serious illness. When she was well, she went to the Carmelites and became a nun. With a great deal of struggle, she reformed the Carmelite order. She wrote several deeply spiritual books and is one of the great mystics of the church as well as one of three female doctors of the church.

Handpainted with a prayer and/or information about the saint on the back.

Retablos are devotional images of Christian saints painted by santeros, or "saint makers." Retablos in New Mexico were created and popularized in the 1800s, and traditional practices are still used by artisans there today. The artist of this retablo, Lynn Garlick, has been creating retablos in New Mexico since 1993.
